Part 4

From Randers it was forty-five minutes straight west to VIBORG, home of the Viborg International Billboard Painting Festival. During the first week in June, selected artists paint these extra-large canvases, which are then displayed along with previously done billboards totaling thirty-six in the Brænderigården until the end of August. This year’s theme was graffiti inspired art and included some of the world’s top artists: Blade, John Howard, Horphe, Nychos, Ken Sortais, Christian Dinesen, Anders Reventlov, and Larsen. The skies were threatening, but we saw them all:

Then it was just over a half hour to SILKEBORG and the Museum Jørn. That’s Asger Jørn. Asger Jørn was born in Jutland and went on to become the driving force of the group called CoBrA.

Made up of artists from the cities of Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam, the founders had some pretty radical ideas. Asger Jørn, for one, had a few opinions:

"Anything really new is repulsive, because it is abnormal and unreasonable."

This last piece is a very large, imposing painting. Here is someone else's shot:

There was also a show of work by fellow CoBrA founder, Dutch artist, Karel Appel. It was Appel who joined with Corneille and Constant to form the Dutch Experimental Group. This led to contact with Belgian and Danish artists and the founding of CoBrA.

But wait, there's more. Jørn also expressed himself in tapestry done with Pierre Wemaëre.

The ultimate was their The Long Journey. It is fourteen meters long!

And there were others, like:

South to VEJEN, where we were staying with Majbritte and Klaus, who runs a Katpension, which provides very plush and private indoor/outdoor accommodations for cats, and a goodnight from Klaus.

Even here, we got to share some personal art, as Klaus has displayed wood carvings done by his late-father.

Toerskind Gravel Pit (north of Egtved) was the place to see sculptures by Robert Jacobsen and Jean Clareboudt. They did nine sculptures over a period of five years beginning in 1991, utilizing a theme of the sun's path through the sky in the course of a day.

Then we backtracked to BILLUND to see a Sculpture Park we passed by the day before. This is the home planet for Lego so not only was there manufacturing, but a mega Lego resort as well as other family attractions.

There was a very nice collection of sculptures which is still growing. It stretches along a walkway from Legoland to the center of town.
